When it comes to breaking Borussia Dortmund down over Jadon Sancho, Manchester United are yet to make a breakthrough.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ordered interest in all alternatives be called off as he looks to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.
And with negotiations proving difficult, Jesse Lingard or Anthony Martial could be the key to getting a deal done.
They first tried to sign Sancho back in the summer transfer window of 2017, when they got wind he’d be leaving Manchester City.
However, on that occasion, Borussia Dortmund beat them to the young winger – swaying him with the promise of regular first-team football.
United’s failure to finish in the Premier League top four cost them the signing of Sancho in 2019, settling for the arrival of Daniel James from Swansea instead.
And, just last year, Solskjaer’s side were priced out of a deal.United are finding Dortmund problematic over Sancho again this time around, meaning they may have to get creative if they’re to bring the forward to the Theatre of Dreams at the fourth time of asking.
The England international sparkled at West Ham last season, scoring nine goals from 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers.
Lingard has just a year left on his current United contract and, as things stand, he’s not expected to sign a renewal.
The club have slapped a £20million price tag on the England star, who will hold talks with Solskjaer over his future next month.
And instead of seeing Lingard potentially move to a Premier League rival, using him in a swap deal for Sancho would be logical.
When Dortmund got wind Martial could be leaving United back in the summer transfer window of 2018, they were interested.
However, a move to the Westfalenstadion ultimately didn’t happen after Joel Glazer made it clear the France international couldn’t be sold.
United may, however, be tempted to arrange a swap.
Dortmund will find themselves cutting Erling Haaland loose, most likely next summer. The Norway international is committed but, in a year’s time, will be available for just £65m.
And Martial would allow them the chance to sign a replacement 12 months ahead of schedule.
United failed to see the best of the 25-year-old last season, with the Frenchman scoring just seven goals across all competitions.
And he’s another that, as things stand, is likely to spend most of his time on the substitutes bench next time out.
United could be tempted to use Martial to their advantage, especially given how he’s likely to be stuck behind Edinson Cavani when it comes to leading the line.
And Dortmund’s past interest suggests they would be the perfect club to help the Frenchman turn his faltering career around.
United plan to pursue Haaland in 12 months’ time and using Martial in a swap deal for Sancho would definitely help relations between the two clubs.
