What Sergio Ramos said after rejecting Manchester United transfer amid Real Madrid exit

Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid are preparing to kick off a new era next season after it was announced the defender will leave the Bernabeu.

Ramos, winner of five Spanish top division titles and four Champions Leagues, has alerted the attention of United and other big-hitters across Europe ahead of the summer transfer window.

And it’s not the first time the centre-back has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Indeed, back in 2015, the Spaniard was the subject of interest from United – but he remained at Real and went on to clock up 671 appearances for the club over 16 years.

He has also been capped a staggering 180 times by Spain, scoring 23 goals.

Which player would you most like United to target this summer? Let us know in the comments section below.

Speaking to COPE about turning down United in 2016, Ramos said: “There was an offer from United. I considered changing for a while, but Real Madrid was always my priority and there were no economic reasons.

Did I feel cheated [by Madrid]? No, but I did feel disappointed for a while. There were some troubles that came to an end. Flattery from big clubs is always good as this is because you are doing well, but the fans and my club want me.”

Amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and others, United have yet again been linked with Ramos as they continue to prioritise a centre-back partner for £80million captain Harry Maguire.

Raphael Varane – a long-time teammate of Ramos at Real – and Villarreal star Pau Torres are two targets for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ramos has struggled with injuries this season, while there has been plenty of focus on a break down in his relationship with Madrid president Florentino Perez.
