Manchester United have reportedly submitted their opening offer for Raphael Varane – but it falls way below Real Madrid’s asking price.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to add a new centre-back to his ranks in the summer transfer window, with captain Harry Maguire in need of a new defensive partner.
And it appears the Red Devils boss has set his sights on a move for Varane, who is out of contract at the Bernabeu next year.
According to Manchester Evening News, United have tabled an opening £50million bid for the France defender, but Madrid have set an £80million asking price.
It is believed they are still in talks with Madrid over a potential compromise, as they are reluctant to meet that valuation in full given Varane only has a year left on his contract.
Los Blancos are prepared to offload him for the right price this summer due to their financial problems, with the club in €901m worth of debt right now.
Old Trafford chiefs risk making the same mistake that cost them a deal for Jadon Sancho last year, which they also appear to be making again in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Dortmund slapped a £108million price tag on Sancho in 2020, but United reportedly saw a bid worth £91million rejected by the German club.
