Chelsea star N’Golo Kante isn’t thinking about the Ballon d’Or despite his heroic performance against Manchester City in the Champions League final.

He covered every blade of grass in a superb ‘Man of the Match’ display – but he isn’t getting carried away with his individual performances when it comes to personal accolades.

Kante, who has to be in the running for the coveted Ballon d’Or, played down the thought of winning the prestigious prize in a humble post-match interview following his colossal Champions League final outing.

He told RMC Sport: “It’s amazing. It’s the result of a lot of effort, after a lot of difficulties during the season.

“The Man of the Match award is secondary. The main thing is the work of the whole group.

“It is pride and joy. We fought to qualify for the final. Today, we have suffered, we have the reward.”

Asked about his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, he replied: “No, for the moment we are savouring the Champions League, the Euros are soon, I will join the France team and I hope to win that as well.”

Before Saturday’s showpiece, former Chelsea hero Ramires said that Kante would be a deserving winner if he won the Champions League and Euro 2020.

“I watch Kante play and there’s a movie in my head because I see myself. He plays, he’s got a highlight reel, but no one sees him wanting to show up off the field,” he said.

“He’s very calm, always quiet. He’s an extraordinary player. He’s in every corner of the field.

“In defence, in the middle, in attack, on the sides. He’s among the best in the world. The way he’s playing is impressive.

“He may turn out to be one of the top three in the world.

“But it’s hard for a defensive midfielder to come in and win a Ballon d’Or. It would be deserved, yes [if he won the Champions League and Euro 2020].”

Should Kante win the Ballon d’Or? Let us know what you think.

N’Golo Kante delivered a man of the match display in Chelsea’s Champions League final win, then showed his humble side when he encountered the famous trophy.

The 5ft 6in midfield dynamo covered every blade of in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Manchester City, proving impossible to pass and even winning the most aerial duels for his side. Remarkable.

But as his Chelsea teammates received their medals and walked past the Champions League trophy, each one stopped to plant a kiss on it. Everybody, that is, except Kante: who just gave it a shy, awkward pat with both hands and carried on walking.
